S27-Dragon Badge

The particularly attractive badge on which this replica is based was found in the Netherlands. It is difficult to say with certainty why this badge would have been worn, as the Dragon was mainly symbolic of the Devil and the powers of evil. If it can be seen as having a knotted tail then it would be symbolic of evil defeated; or perhaps it was associated with one of the saints such as Ss George or Catherine, for whom the dragon was an attribute.

Original found in the Netherlands.

14th century.

26mm A dragon within a beaded frame.
